Samuel Willenberg, "Fig. 3," passed away at 93 years of age, on the 19th February 2016 (14). He was the last living witness of the horrors of Treblinka, and was very eager to share his stories. He wrote two books on his experiences, and participated in several documentaries, one of which I had the pleasure to watch. His story is fascinating. During the war, he was part of the working unit within Treblinka, the Sonderkommando’s.

He participated of the uprising in August 1943, and escaped Treblinka. His experience was described in detail in the documentary “Death Camp Treblinka, Survivor Stories,” (4) in which he only cries once, when he remembered seeing his sister’s clothes in the chaotic item separation part of the camp. His legacy will never be forgotten. A lot of what we know regarding Treblinka today was recounted by Mr. Willenburg. May he rest in peace.
